There are wedding trends, and then there are wedding joys, and having your dog at your ceremony definitely falls into the joy category! At Mankin Mansion, we love when couples include their four legged family members. We allow pups onsite during pre-ceremony photos, the ceremony itself and a portion of cocktail hour… and then they head home so you can relax, celebrate and know they are safe.

Here is how to make the most of having your dog at your wedding without adding stress to your day.

1. Bring Them for the Moments That Matter Most

Your dog is welcome to be part of:

  • Pre-ceremony portraits (think: first look with your best furry friend)
  • The ceremony (ring bearer, flower pup or just moral support)
  • Some of cocktail hour for cuddles and photos with guests

After that, we ask that someone trusted brings them home so that you can fully enjoy your reception without worrying about bathroom breaks, overstimulation or... escape attempts!

2. Designate a Dog Handler (Not You, Not Your Bridal Party)

If your dog is coming to your wedding, a dedicated handler is non-negotiable. This should be someone who:

  • Knows your dog’s quirks
  • Is not drinking (this is key)
  • Can transport your dog home afterward

Pro tip: Some couples hire a professional dog attendant who handles everything from walks to water bowls!

3. Bring the Essentials... and Then Some!

Your pup’s wedding day go bag should include:

  • Leash + backup leash
  • Waste bags
  • Water + portable bowl
  • Treats
  • Lint roller (for later… you’re welcome)
  • Anything calming they use at home (favorite toy, blanket, high value treat, etc.)

4. Prep Your Pup for Success

A well exercised dog is a well behaved dog

  • Give them a long walk beforehand
  • Practice walking down an aisle like space
  • Let them meet your handler in advance

If your dog is anxious, shy or unpredictable around crowds, it may be better to include them in photos only.

5. Think About Their Outfit (Yes, Really)

We have seen everything: bow ties, flower collars, tiny tuxedos. Whatever you choose, make sure it:

  • Fits comfortably
  • Does not restrict movement
  • Will not overheat them

Bonus points for matching the wedding colors!!

6. Consider Your Timeline

Your dog’s window at the venue is short, but sweet. Plan their arrival strategically so they are fresh for:

  • Photos
  • The ceremony
  • A few minutes of cocktail hour

Then let them head home, get comfy and take the nap they deserve.

7. Decide How You Want Them Incorporating Into Photos

Share your must have dog photos with your photographer ahead of time, such as:

  • Getting ready snuggles
  • First look with your pup
  • Ceremony aisle walk
  • Family photos

Photographers love dogs, but they love a plan even more!

8. Be Honest About Their Personality

Look, not every dog is a wedding dog.

If your pup is nervous around crowds, hates loud noises, or thrives on chaos, consider including them in pre-ceremony portraits only. That way, you get the memories and the peace of mind.

Final Thoughts: Joy, but Make It Manageable

Having your dog at your wedding is incredibly special and at Mankin Mansion, we make it easy, structured and stress-free. Your dog gets their moment in the spotlight, your guests get adorable photo ops and you get to enjoy your reception knowing your furry family member is safe and settled.

If you are planning to bring your dog, let us know early so we can help you map out the smoothest plan.

Because weddings are important and dogs make everything better!
